The possible ayurvedic correlation for rheumatoid arthritis is with Amavta and Vatashonitam. Rheumatoid arthritis cannot be correlated to a single disease. Sometimes protocols of management of Amavata and Sometime Vata sonitam are used in different stages, according to Amavastha and Niramavastha

Ama vata

According to Ayurveda, the food we eat get digested by Agni (digestive fire) and transformed into ahara rasa, which gets absorbed and nourishes the other dhathus in our body.

Due to Apathya Ahara Seva (improper food intake) and mandagni ( lack of digestive fire), the food is not digested correctly from ama. Ama is the accumulated harmful substances at different levels of metabolism. This formed ama blocks the srothas of dhathus and vitiates the vata.

As a result, Vata gets dislodged in kaphasthanas like sandhi (joints) and produce amavata.

Symptoms of ama vata

  • Inflammation of joints with tenderness
  • Severe pain in joints lasting throughout the day
  • Heaviness of the body and joints. Because of the heaviness, joints become stiffer. Since morning is the kaphakala the stiffness of joints will be severe in the morning.
  • Very less interest in physical activities due to the pain and disability.
  • Fever like symptoms. Rise in temperature around the joints or all over the body. some times there will not be a rise in body temperature but the patient may feel like they are having a fever.
  • Presence of prodromal symptoms like fatigue, anorexia, weakness and mild musculoskeletal symptoms may present before the onset of main symptoms.
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhoea, indigestion and lack of appetite may also present.

Vatashonitam

Vatashonitam or vataraktha is correctly vitiated Vata and rakta. Vata and raktha get vitiated by their own causes. The vitiated raktha (blood) obstructs the Vata, Vata gets dislodged in mamsa sandhi dhathus ( muscles and joints) as a result pitta and Kapha also gets vitiated and manifest the vatoshonitam.

Symptoms of Vatashonitam

  • Severe pain, tenderness, inflammation and burning sensation in the affected joints.
  • Restriction in the movement of joints and Joint deformity may also be seen.

Understanding the prognosis or treatability of rheumatoid arthritis

Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in Kerala has a systematic diagnosis method. After proper diagnosis, we have to understand the level of prognosis. An accurate prognosis is needed before starting the treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Then only can we decide whether it is treatable or not?

Ayurvedic classification of the disease according to its treatability is

1. Sadhya (Treatable)

Sukhasadhya ( Easy to Treat)

Krichra Sadhya (Difficult to Treat)

2. Asadhya (Untreatable)

Yapya (Palliable)

By properly analyzing the prognosis of a disease, the expected result will be more realistic.
