    Importance of a healthy morning routine

    An individual’s entire day is determined by how he begins the day. Rushing through the morning will make someone anxious and agitated for the rest of the day. 

    If it gets off to a slow and worn-out start, the person will feel sluggish and heavy the rest of the day. The person will burn out if he exerts too much effort in the morning. Therefore, it’s essential to maintain a balanced morning routine without exhausting oneself.

    A solid morning routine can help you feel more productive, focused, and motivated. It helps to promote health and the overall well-being of the individual.

    The importance of maintaining a daily schedule is:

    • To keep the biological clock in balance.
    • To support the person’s normal health.
    • To produce vitality, self-control, tranquility, and enjoyment.
    • To reduce stress.
    • To improve mental and emotional health
    • To increase life expectancy in the absence of diseases

    Ayurvedic concept of the morning routine

    The value of a daily routine is emphasized in the traditional texts of Ayurveda. The daily regimen (dinacharya) has been explained in all the classical literature of Ayurveda. The first hour of the day is when the mind and body are naturally more open to receiving information. Therefore, creating a healthy habit that coincides with the body’s natural rhythm aids in encouraging balance and well-being.

    The morning routine explained in the classical textbooks of Ayurveda is as follows:

    1. Early morning awakening

    A healthy person needs to get out of bed at “Brahma muhurta,” or roughly one and a half hours before sunrise. The advantages of rising early in the day are:

    • Maintains the biological clock in balance.
    • Maintain the average health of an individual.

    2. Meditation

    Spend some time reflecting on your body, psyche, etc.

    3. Stools and urine evacuation

    When the desire strikes, expel the stool and urine. Do not force stop; otherwise, hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, and anal fissures will result.

    4. Brushing of teeth 

    When brushing your teeth, use a soft toothbrush and toothpaste with an acrid, bitter, or astringent flavor. Brushing is traditionally done with soft-tipped, 12-inch-long branches of neem, ficus, acacia, etc. 

    In addition to enhancing taste, brushing teeth helps eliminate bad breath, the inability to taste, and sludge built up on the teeth, tongue, and mouth.

    5. Tongue scraping

    To maintain good oral health and remove toxins and ama accumulated over the night on the tongue, scrap the tongue after brushing the teeth.

    6. Gandusham/Kabalam 

    Holding medicinal oil or lukewarm water in the mouth for a few seconds or gargling with the same for a while strengthens teeth, improves sound clarity, avoids toothache, and lessens the sensitivity of the teeth and gums.

    7. Applying collyrium

    Medicated collyrium daily results in thicker, more luscious eyelashes and clear, precise vision.

    8. Pratimarsha Nasyam

    Injecting two drops of Anu Taila into each nostril twice a day helps clear the paranasal sinuses and surrounding areas removes excess mucosal secretions, and guards against infections in size above the head.

    9.Abhyangam (oil massage)

    Combining oil with massage strokes helps to improve a person’s general health and well-being. It prevents aging, dispels exhaustion, and provides sound sleep, healthy skin, and a muscular physique.

    10. Bathing

    Giving the body a warm bath below the neck gives it strength. Additionally, it increases strength, vitality, and digestion.

    11. Consumption of food

    Food must be wholesome and consumed in moderation.

    How to schedule an Ayurvedic morning routine

    You can schedule an Ayurvedic morning routine by following these steps:

    1. Early morning awakening

    Try to wake up before sunrise. If you are not a morning person, try to rise from bed at least 6 A M. For those with a Vata and Kapha constitution, getting up before 6 a.m. is excellent. For those with pitta-type constitutions, it is recommended to rise at about six in the morning.

    2. Morning prayer or affirmation

    Instead of checking your phone first thing in the morning, spend five or ten minutes reflecting on your superpower or simply yourself. Make a list of the main things you need to do and a schedule for the day.

    3. Cleanses the mouth and the digestive tract 

    Brush your teeth with a soft brush and toothpaste or powder that has an astringent, acrid, or bitter taste. To get rid of the extra toxins accumulated in the tongue after brushing, scrape it with a steel or copper tongue cleaner.

    After brushing your teeth, hold lukewarm water or oil in your mouth for five to ten minutes. This helps to cleanse the mouth and support healthy teeth and gums.

    Drink a glass of warm water or lime water. It facilitates bowel movements and aids in the body’s rehydration. Evacuate the urine and feces if the urge comes.

    4. Oil Massage and Bath

    Gently massage oil all over the body. Begin with your face, ears, and toes before moving on to the rest of your body. Get into the habit of rinsing your head twice or three times per week. Every day for at least 10 minutes, massage with oil. Use oil according to the body’s constitution and seasons.

    Massage the skin with sesame or almond oil for Vata, coconut, sunflower, olive oil for pitta, and wild sunflower or mustard oil for Kapha.

    Use warm water for your shower below the neck. Utilize cold or regular water when showering the head. Rinse your body after starting with your head. Utilize soap, body wash, or organic powders to your body’s constitution. Apply moisturizer to your skin to keep it hydrated.

    5. Meditation or light stretching exercise

    Practice yoga or light stretching exercises to energize your body and mind.

    6. Breakfast

    Eat a light and easily digestible breakfast.

    Diet in Ayurvedic Morning Routine

    Always make an effort to have a small, easily absorbed-breakfast.

    To balance the Vata dosha in the morning, warm, cooked cereals like rice porridge, oats, wheat, etc., warm milk or milk substitute, bung beans, lentils, chickpeas, carrots, sweet potatoes, soups and stews made of bone broth, lentils, and vegetables, ripe fruits like mangoes and papaya, etc. 

    Foods that are overly dry, light, and chilly should be avoided as they can vitiate Vata dosha.

    Include foods like cereals like oats or barley; cooked vegetables with cooling properties like cucumbers, broccoli, and leafy greens; fruits like mangoes, melons, and grapes; chilled yogurt or other dairy products; smoothies made with cucumber, coconut water, mint, etc. to balance the pitta dosha. Avoid dishes that are too heavy, too spicy, or that have deep-fried items.

    Eating light, dry foods that are simple to digest to balance the Kapha dosha is suggested. Include light and dry grains like quinoa or oats, ripe fruits with a hint of astringencies like pears, apples, and berries, and smoothies made with light and dry elements like cucumber, green vegetables, and so forth. Stay away from foods that are overly rich and heavy.

    Do’s and Don’t’s


    • At the very least, get up at 6 a.m.
    • Warm water should be consumed to help the body detox.
    • Practice yoga or light stretching exercises daily.
    • Take a warm bath or shower to cleanse your body and mind.
    • Every day, use nourishing oil or moisturizer.


    • Avoid drinking iced or cold beverages and eating heavy or unwholesome foods.
    • Remember to scrape your tongue and brush your teeth.
    • Be quick to leave the bed.
